We have engaged a number of builders over the years, but our experience with Glenn and Johnny exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning with pricing the work, discussing progress and follow up, there was complete transparency. The standard of work is the highest we’ve seen locally, and their follow up has been superb; Johnny still pops up 2 years later to make sure there are no issues. They have a great group of subcontractors, who communicate well and the total build was well co-ordinated
And throughout this, they have been funny, sincere and very pleasant to be with.
Without question, if we have any further building needs, we will approach these guys.

There are builders ….. and there are builders who care. Builders with flair. Builders who have well and truly done their time on challenging and difficult builds. And any construction project which involves an architect – particularly a ‘name’ architect – is certain to challenge even the very best in the building business. Johnny and Glen relished the opportunity to build The Pavilion for us. We were fortunate that Pete Bossley leapt at the opportunity to design a modest one bedroom holiday accommodation house to complement our John Scott designed holiday home on our property. Pete is a huge admirer of John Scott but now he is the head honcho of his own huge practice. So we lucked out on our old friendship with Pete and The Pavilion design was born. Amazing drafting skill from Brent Scott of Citrus Design put plans in front of Johnny and Glen who costed the project and committed to it. I’d like to say the building process was seamless …. but who has ever had that experience when an outstanding architect is involved? Instead of throwing their toys Johnny and Glen worked through problems – they called them challenges – and then worked with the draftsman and architect to find practical solutions. So we ended up with a fantastic building built to the very highest standards with no cost surprises that we were not apprised of. And probably the best thing is that architect, draftsman, client and builders completed the project as great mates. Phillips Downie Construction are ace builders, fantastic guys and just really enjoyable to work with. Thanks – it was fun and we have the most wonderful wee holiday house on the planet.

Glen Downie of Phillips Downie Construction recently built our house at Mangakuri Beach, Hawke’s Bay. I simply cannot recommend Glen highly enough. The quality of his building is second to none. He is incredibly efficient and thoughtful and he never falls behind his schedule.
Glen is charming and wonderful to deal with. Adie, who was project manager, and I found it a pleasure working with him.
The tradesmen that Phillips Downie use are all very professional and highly competent.
At the end of the day, the quality of the finished product very much reflects Glen’s skill and the skill of the tradespeople that he uses.
I simply cannot recommend Glen and Phillips and Downie Construction highly enough and would be happy to discuss this further.

Johnny Phillips and Glen Downie built an architecturally designed beach house for us approximately 45 minutes from the nearest service centre. Throughout they were well planned, totally reliable and efficient in every way. Their integrity and the quality of their work are unquestionably sound. Johnny Phillips has done a number of building jobs for me, the largest of which was to renovate a 100 year old one bedroom cottage into a three bedroom luxury accommodation. He is an extremely professional builder. He also managed the project and had numerous great design ideas that we incorporated into the Lodge.
